Despite these setbacks, Acre fell on July 12, and with that, the victors immediately began fighting over the spoils. Richard insulted the German contingent by casting its banner from the parapets, causing its commander, Leopold of Austria, to side with Philip of France to oppose Richard’s choice of Guy of Lusignan as King of Jerusalem. The argument was premature, for though the loss of Acre was a blow to Saladin, Jerusalem was still firmly in his control. Moreover, the dispute between the leaders of the crusade led Philip and Leopold to leave with most of their troops, leaving Richard with what he had craved all along: the field of glory to himself. The whole episode would have grave repercussions for Richard and the people of England at a later time.
